War Bests and Worsts
2005-08-23 - 4:36 p.m.
So, we have returned from the War. The trucks pulled into the
home driveway at 7pm on Sat, and were unloaded by 7:45pm that
night. Then we closed the garage doors and collapsed, piles out
of truck and into garage and den. Laundry, including washing the
16 new yards of pastel linen, to total 10 or so loads was completed
last night. Sunday was reconfiguring the storage area in the
basement, clean sweeping the area of stuff we haven't used in ages, and
putting in new shelving. (Anyone need a couple of unused coleman
chairs, a drafting table, a small helm, etc. talk to me. Full
list to come.) Then we unpacked the garage into the newly
configured space and went to go unpack the trailer, and take home
Pennsic Chocolate Milk Ice Cream courtesy of the fabulous
Theodora. So, we have recovered from the War, all except my
throat and chest. I'm channeling Kathleen Turner (or Lauren
Bacall, whichever makes you happier.)
Pennsic Bests and Worsts
Bests:
- Kitchen Herb Garden!
Parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, lavender, hyssop, spearmint
(which was great as a breath refresher- knocked out the garlic chicken
bread boule), and something else we think was called septum. Oh,
and the ivy and rock wall for good measure.
- Thora Sharptooth's Warp
Weighted Loom class, and getting to weave 5 inches of tabby
after class was done.
- Thora Sharptooth's class on the Guilloche
braid and lovely Disa as company. Learned a new 2 person
string technique, and then figured out how to do it by myself back in
the common tent.
- Finally settling down to learn Sprang
from the talented Oddny, and trading Nalbinding lessons in
return. After my initial class, I made two more sprang bags out
of wool (one white and fluffy, one blue and yummy) which both made it
home with Thjora. :) Will have to make another one for
myself. Found out that the Miguel laptop loom works well for
shorter sprang items.
- Ella baked goods courtesy of her sweetie, Porkchop.
- Minimal but qualitative shopping:
owl and pussycat fibulae, glass from Arab Boy, lovely perugia table
cloth with fluer-de-lys, Woven into the Earth, etc. Was very bad
and didn't get any presents for anyone else. You have no choice
but to forgive me, I'm cute and sick.
- Beautiful Fluer de Lys pitcher
from White Swan thanks to my faboo camp mates.
- Siobhan's AOA
- John's Pelican and the fun Gen-rules vigil line.
- Holding baby Danny, and cooing at the Seonaid
- Aldred's Laurel Vigil and the arming tent that fit 12 visitors
- Micheal of Bedford receiving his very deserved Pelican
- Justus's vigil and Knighting on the field. Hearing the
entire populace sing Belt and Chain to such an accomplished fighter and
bard seemed to touch him and made a magic moment for me, even if I did
sing it in Bass.
- Vlad the Chocolate Milk Fairy and especially the fairy wings!
- Bog crawling with Siobhan
- Roman wear
goodness!
- Salon Genevieve- average
of 3 heads of hair a day, next year I need salon hours and tip jar for
donations to the regalia fund.
- Well run Atlantian 5 Man Rapier
Melee tournament, considering the obstacles. Cristofana
wins the cabana boys for having all her stuff on site to help it run
smoothly.
- Happy painting of
tapestries in camp.
- Peli-meeting that lasted exactly an hour.
- Witnessing Val taking Gabriel (Kaylun) as a page
- Meeting Duke Alaric's lady Helena and sharing her hospitality
down at Vlad's. She is a stunning lady.
- Oban and Gabriel's
Landing, and good company, and Emergen-C
from Benefse.
- A bit of Chatnarr time, and a lovely escort home.
- Four course meal for stone soup night: appetizers, jerk beef,
mozzarella chicken, brats, pasta soup, salad, fresh guacamole, and fruit crepes for dessert that I had
to drag in folks out of Grey Fox and off the street to help us
finish. I think Angus was surprised.
- Obey Pink Leader, Fear Green
Leader, Crush on Blue Leader...
Worsts:
- Missing Dred's elevation to the Laurel because of a
misunderstanding of the start time. Went back to get the scroll
translation and missed the whole thing. Thanks to Thjora for
punting for me as the Peli-speaker. I really felt like sh*t for
missing it, and am still a bit upset. Okay, more than a
bit. stiff upper lip and all that. Important thing is he
got the accolade, and many people got to witness it.
- Missing Michael's induction into the Pelican, cause I had to do
my hair. And I thought it would be last. Did get to
congratulate and welcome privately though.
- Breaking one of my Arab Boy glass bracelets on the first
wearing. I figured if they were Ella-proof, I'd be safe.
Apparently they are not rated to furniture moving.
- Missing the massive squiring night, cause Pennsic is too big and
we were running a vigil.
All in all a good war, except for the two fairly big things.
