White Scarf, Wedding, and more sailing...
2005-06-24 - 4:56 p.m.
Holy Crap! Two weeks worth of recap?!?
When last we left our intrepid heroes, they were awash in sailing
aftermath. Okay, that sounds kinda naughty, but there you go.
The following weekend was part SCA, part sailing.
We went to the hot and humid as Hades Highland River Melees.
Which makes me wonder if Hell is a dry or humid heat? There was
happy Kynny White Scarfing, with the Bedingfields arriving just in the
nick of time... Despite the weather it was a very good ceremony,
touching, humbling, honoring... The rest of the day was spent
cooling down the fighters that got easily overheated, watching the
rapier fighters melee, and in general trying to create breezes that
weren't there and being social creatures. I honestly don't
remember much other than that the scroll was awesome, Tonwen got to be
by the Kynny's side and tie his scarf on him, setting up the tent,
going to court, a bit of a lecture, sitting around and wetting veils in
cooler water, going to another court, fetching the truck and a chat
with his Shekcelleny, and breaking down the camp. Tara had pretty
pink toes. It was that kind of day... After court, and
2/3rds Lost Cause singing the processional for Gruffy for his
Pelicaning, we beat a hasty retreat to AC. Fun was had at the
Western Sizzlin' and the waiter tolerated us well. We crashed
hard once we arrived home, especially with another early morning
pending.
Sunday morning was early to rise to meet up with the monkey to head up
to Baltimore and check out the new boat.
I still maintain that the name Island
Three is about a gay as Silver
Sailor. Since checkout went much faster than we
anticipated, we took her out for a nice long spin down to the Anchor
Inn and back. I call the new boat B, since the brand name is
Beneteau. B sails
wonderfully. She is sharp, sleek, gorgeous, and smart.
Hello autopilot! And w00t to lifelines that don't loose tension
when you open up the side entrances to the cockpit. The
helmsman's seat is even comfortable. Beautiful cockpit, and even
has a fairly kicking sound system, speakers in the cockpit so you don't
have to blast the radio from down below to hear it. Love the new
boat, love love love... Even the stack and pack main with the
reefing lines is faboo, once you figure out the quirks... We had
a great day out on the bay, despite the fact that we were missing
Gilligan, who burnt himself asleep at the pool. Sunday came to a
close with the Storvik business meeting, which was about as tedious as
any other local group business meeting. Fun folks who prefer to
socialize than get stuff accomplished. I'm sure it is no
different anywhere else.
Last week was a blur, aside from the Roxbury Mill business meeting,
which was actually lots of fun. Likely this was mostly due to
Theo bringing me a Chicken Out wrap and us staying at the Hun-e-B's
house until far too late chatting and kibitzing about all manner of
stuff. It was lovely to get quality time with the Duchess, the
Rocket Scientist and the pink poodle Pookie. I also accomplished
another mousie and sent it home with the Violante for her kitty
Booger.
Friday we (Theo, Roland, Alan and I) got on the road to Gastonia, NC
for the wonderful nuptials of the fabulous Chris and Tracie. We
had a lovely long drive with a lunch pause at Kahill's in South
Hill. I only almost killed us once, and got to start on a
knitting project. We hit Gastonia, checked into our hotel and
then headed to lovely Lineberger Park for friends, family and Val
cooking on the grill. I had a great time being girly with Drea
and Courtney (shoes!), meeting Chris's amazing parents (his Dad is
funny and his mom is gorgeous, reminds me of Ealdthryth), chatting with
Tracie's dad about sailing, etc. After dark when the party broke
up, we headed out to Val and Courtney's place to hang out and play
games, and shave Chris's head, and in general have a lovely late
evening. Thanks to fascinating friends I got us back to the hotel
around 2am. yoiks!
Saturday we slept in big time, had brunch at the Cracker Barrel, and
subjected the boys to shopping at the nearby mall. I found a
skirt and three tops after hours of
looking. The boys, once we pointed them in the direction of the
Buy 1 Get 1 Free hawaiian shirts, cleaned up in 15 mins.
sigh. Such is the fickle nature of female shopping. We're
too 3D, we have to try stuff on. Boys can just pick something off
the rack in the right size and all will be well when they get it
home.. sniggafriggasnotfairgrrrrrr... After the shopping
ordeal (we tried to send the boys out to the electronic places in the
mall to occupy them, but they came back too soon.) we went to the Texas
Steakhouse for peanuts and drinks. yummy mudslide... Then back to
the hotel to nap and get ready for the wedding.
Of course, I forgot my copy of the poem I was to read. Of course,
I was putting on my lipstick in the car. Of course I forgot my
phone charger and said phone was dying a slow death. Of course,
we cut our arrival time a little close. But we made it in
time. I was cute in my pink suit. The Bride was gorgeous in
her strapless embroidered gown with sheer lace mantilla veil. The
groom was handsome in his nice collarless tux with snazzy satin
accents. The ceremony was eccentric and lovely and fitting.
I didn't flub the poem
and think I made the right decision to read it to the couple instead of
to the crowd. It was their day after all. The garden was in
bloom, the guests were resplendent in their smiles, and all was
well. The rain even held off until we all retreated inside.
The reception was wonderful as well with butlered hors d'ourves,
different kinds of punch, elephant poo paper guestbook, fine company,
yummy food, funky music, etc. The Bride and Groom danced their
first to Etta James' At Last,
Tracie and her father danced to Always
Look on the Bright Side of Life (which got the room singing
along), and Chris danced with his mom to something reggae that the
sound system sadly cut out. Alan and I got to slow dance once,
Val and Wren really tore up the floor to some swing music and later on
Drea and I got to rock out to Love
Shack. I was somewhat disappointed that the infamous Aunt
Rita chose that day to forego her leopard print for floral
instead. She seemed like a fun lady though. One
photographer kept catching pictures of Calli with a woman-not-his-wife,
so I made sure that was remedied later on. The cake was
wonderful, the toast was elegant, the couple was beaming with
joy. It was everything a wedding should be. Afterwards we
wished Chris and Tracie our best, and fun on the honeymoon, and boogied
back to the hotel to chill in Byram and Kim's room until sleep took
us.
Sunday was a hearty Waffle House breakfast, and the long drive home
where I spent a little time showing Theo nalbinding so she can make her
own mice, as well as finishing a few more mousies, especially the
special Cosette inspired mouse that I will need to photograph before I
hand it over. Interesting experiment. hee hee hee...
This weekend boasts a Choral concert tonight with Laura to see my older
sister perform with the Hickory
Choral Society at the Lutheran
Church of the Reformation in downtown DC, drinks to follow. I
have a baby shower to go to on Saturday, and we have recording on
Sunday. It boasts enough to be full, and yet plenty of quiet
spaces to curl up with a good book or some more yarn...
see y'all on the flip side...
