deja vu of 20 year anyone?
2001-06-18 - 2:34 p.m.

This morning I made it to the gym. Unfortunately they are repainting the gym. There are three things wrong with this.

  1. If the paint fumes are bad enough, my asthma flares up, which is a very unhappy thing when trying to exercise.
  2. I get severe headaches from strong paint fumes as well. Like the kind that require lots of Advil Migraine and darkness and sleep.
  3. I don't know who made the decisions about the color combo, but they should be fired. It looks like a bunch of sherbert was puked on the walls. The gym used to be lovely blue and white, simple, elegant, for a gym. Now they have painted one wall lime green sherbert, one vanilla, one berry, one orange sherbert, and who knows what the rest will bring. It's, um, very interesting... Of course they are building a dividing wall between the aerobics floor and the stretching area, which will be more comfortable, but they painted some spots in there that Windows default desktop Teal. Kinda disturbing. That and all the clocks are down, so I had to guess at the time.

Now, I kinda dig paint, really I do, it's the child in me. I like to paint little things, or tent poles out in the garage, things like that, ventilation very important. However, in an enclosed gym, pool locker room, work hallway, these enclosed spaces with little ventilation and things that I am forced to pass through if I want to workout, swim, or work, respecitvely.. It just sucks. I asked the poor guy at the desk, who had just taken a big bite of food, how long they would be painting, and he said they should be done tomorrow. Luckily, it seemed to be not too bad for an hour workout only.

Now, let's visit the event that occured this weekend, shall we? Highland River Melees, rarely a comfortable event, but never as bad as it was this year. On the drive there, comments abounded of, Looks like the drive to 20 year, and So, when the event is cancelled, we could shop at the Prime Outlets, or catch a movie, whatcha wanna see? The event was not cancelled and was bearable for most of the day. It was oppressively hot and humid. In the morning they put Thomas of Calais on vigil to be knighted, and then the fighting commenced. I won't go over what happened with dayshade space, etc. cause it has already been handled, sort of. :( It rained off and on throughout the day, but was mostly dry. Mostly. Feet were wet, hems were soaked, hey this is sounding like 20 year. I bought two new lucets from Siobhan and Mungoe and Mel provided food for us, which was a godsend. As far as tailing the P&P, it was a relatively low stress day. Dame Beatrice asked me at her vigil to help judge the competition, which I followed up on that promise. Think positive, think positive...
Then came court. Court set up was pretty easy and most folks were very laid back about it which helped us retainers do our job, which was good. Court started off pretty good, Sir Thomas was knighted, worthies spoke, Tosh and Livia got QoCs, Augie got his AOA, other cool things. But at one time during court the drizzle had greater aspirations and turned into your average down pour. Remember 20 year? Galmr had to scoot his throne in a little to keep from getting completely soaked. Jaudin as guard got pretty much soaked, but kept the weapons under the shade to keep them dry, except that the shade started misting halfway through the rain. It was just bad. I took off my turban and made it into a veil and rain break, sort of. Alan got drenched, we all did. It was after court that we looked at each other and decided that we didn't care that we had paid for food, we had to leave, our apologies to Their Excellencies of Highland Foorde and the autocrats. So we bailed on feast and eventually made it to the Western Sizzlin' for steaks for dinner. It was warm and dry, we were happy. But before we made it to the WS, we had to strike camp first. I sent Alan for the truck, and started packing up our pavilion as fast as I could, encouraging others to retrieve their stuff, or risk it being placed in a pile in the rain. I was soooo done! We looked over the creek that runs through the site, which was quickly encroaching on its banks, and noticed that we were perilously near the creek. Any higher and the event name would have been changed to Highland Flood Plains Melees. So we packed up everything, had lots of help, which was appreciated. While we hated packing wet canvas, we had no choice, and it was either pack wet canvas during the downpour, or in the dark. Both options sucked. We shoved everything in the truck, corralled the caravan, and headed out to Western Sizzlin' Of course I'm the only one who remembered where it was, so Alan drove, following my directions, and I changed my clothes in the front seat, which is always interesting, shoving my wet garb to a pile on the floorboard. We arrive at WS, drying out, eating our fill, and trying to forget the rain, before our long drive home. The rest is uneventful, as everyone made it home safe and alive. And that was Highland River Melees, sigh... I'm sensing a theme for events this summer...

So, Sunday, Alan and I slept in, me more so than he. Around 11am, we set back up the wet tent, which was almost amusing, unpacked the wet truck, and let everything that was wet dry in the beautiful sun that graced our day. Once, again, they couldn't have had this weather on Sat? sheesh... the rest of the day was relatively lazy with laundry being accomplished, Trading Spaces was watched, fish tanks being cleaned, book being read, a nap here and there, lounging about the pond being done, and the tent was taken back down after dry, swept, cleaned and stored away, high and dry. Sadly, I didn't get any motivation to sew at all, but that's life. The piles will have to lear at me for a few more days. We finished the day with calls to the respective Dads on Father's Day, and dinner with Mel at the Silver Diner. Yummy spinach, feta and mushroom omelete... yum.

Sunday was pretty luxurious, Saturday sucked big time, but the weekend was survived by all.
